On July 15, Beijing Daxing Airport police reported an unusual and alarming incident involving a foreign passenger who sent the flight crew into a frenzy by vaping in an airplane restroom, resulting in his subsequent detention and penalty.

The drama unfolded on the evening of June 14, 2024, during a routine flight from Zhoushan to Beijing Daxing. As the aircraft cruised at high altitude, the tranquility was abruptly shattered when the smoke alarm went off, triggering an emergency response from the crew. With precision and calmness, the crew executed their emergency procedures to prevent panic among the passengers. The source of the alarm was swiftly located: a foreign male passenger, oblivious to the chaos he was causing, had been vaping in the rear lavatory.
Upon landing, the foreigner was immediately summoned by officers from the Daxing Airport Terminal Substation. During the investigation, the passenger admitted to vaping in the restroom, mistakenly believing that the smoke detector wouldn’t be activated by the vapor. His misjudgment led to his administrative detention under the Public Security Administration Punishments Law.
In light of this incident, the police reiterated the importance of adhering to aviation safety regulations. According to the “Notice of the Public Security Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China on Maintaining Civil Aviation Order and Ensuring Air Transport Safety,” smoking, including the use of electronic cigarettes, is strictly prohibited on board. Violators are subject to penalties enforced by public security organs under the “Law of the People’s Republic of China on Public Security Administration Punishments.” Furthermore, those whose actions constitute criminal offenses will face severe legal consequences.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of following safety protocols and the serious repercussions of seemingly minor infractions in the highly regulated environment of air travel.
