India’s First Indigenous Hydrogen Train: A 375km Range Milestone

India’s Integrated Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai has successfully tested its first hydrogen power train coach, marking a revolutionary moment for the country’s rail network. This development makes India one of the few global leaders in railway to lead the way in hydrogen transport.

Since 2022, ICF Efforts have been made to build hydrogen battery trains by retrofitting existing diesel units, showcasing a significant step towards sustainable transportation. This innovative approach not only reduces reliance on fossil fuels but also aims to minimize carbon emissions, contributing to a greener environment. According to the manufacturer, the train’s powertrain provides an impressive 2,400kW of output power, which includes 1,600kW generated from the state-of-the-art fuel cell supplied by Ballard USA and an additional 800kW derived from the robust battery system. With a remarkable range of 375km, these hydrogen battery trains are designed for efficiency and practicality, making them suitable for various routes. Furthermore, the train boasts a top speed of 110 km/h, allowing for swift travel, while its spacious interior can accommodate up to 2,638 passengers, ensuring comfort and convenience during their journey. This advancement in train technology not only exemplifies engineering innovation but also signifies a vital move towards a sustainable future in the rail industry.

The Indian trains will run in the form of ten carriages, consisting of two first motor vehicles and eight non-motor vehicles, designed to ensure a spacious and comfortable travel experience for passengers. This configuration allows for a greater capacity, accommodating more travelers than many similar trains from other manufacturers, which typically feature only two or three carriages. Additionally, the enhanced design of these Indian trains incorporates advanced technology and features to improve safety and efficiency during operation, setting a new standard for rail transport in the region. Through this innovative approach, the Indian railway system aims to provide an unparalleled travel experience while catering to the growing demand for public transportation in the country.

The innovative train will run without diesel or electricity, marking a major milestone for the Indian Railway Corporation and in line with its ambitious goal of becoming a “net zero carbon emitter” by 2030.
